Running 4B Models Offline
One of the most practical developments in AI is the ability to run small models on edge devices. A 4 billion parameter model, or 4B model, is small enough to run on a phone, tablet, or laptop while still being capable enough to be genuinely useful. These models are changing where and how AI can be used.
A 4B model in 4-bit quantization uses only about 2 GB of memory. This fits comfortably in the RAM of any modern smartphone or laptop. On a phone, the model runs on the neural processing unit or GPU, generating 10 to 30 tokens per second. This is fast enough for real time chat, text completion, and basic analysis tasks.
The big advantage of offline models is privacy. Everything stays on your device. No data is sent to the cloud, no servers are involved, no one can see what you are asking. This is crucial for sensitive applications like medical advice, personal journaling, or working with confidential documents. The model works even on an airplane or in a remote location with no internet connection.
What can a 4B model actually do? A lot, surprisingly. It can translate between languages, summarize documents, help with writing, answer questions about general knowledge, explain concepts, and assist with coding. It will not be as good as GPT-4 at complex reasoning or creative tasks, but for everyday assistance, it is more than adequate.
Major companies are investing heavily in on device AI. Apple Intelligence, Google's on device Gemini Nano, and Qualcomm's AI Engine all target running models locally. The availability of models like Phi-3, Qwen 2.5 4B, and Llama 3.2 3B means that capable AI is becoming a standard feature of mobile devices, not something that requires a cloud connection.
