The open weight AI model ecosystem has exploded in the last few years. There are dozens of models to choose from, each with different strengths. Understanding the landscape helps you pick the right model for your specific use case, hardware, and requirements.

Meta's Llama 3 family is the most popular open weight model line. The 8B version is excellent for general purpose use on consumer hardware, offering strong performance across chat, coding, and reasoning tasks. The 70B version competes with GPT-3.5 and some GPT-4 level models on many benchmarks. The 405B version is the largest open model and approaches frontier model quality.

Mistral AI offers a range of models known for efficiency. Mistral 7B was a breakthrough when released, matching larger models. The 72B version is competitive with Llama 3 70B on most benchmarks.

Other notable models include Google's Gemma 2, which offers strong performance in a compact package, DeepSeek's models, which excel at coding and math, and Microsoft's Phi series, which achieves remarkable efficiency through high quality training data. The best advice is to try several models on your specific tasks, since benchmark performance does not always translate to real world results.
