Diffusion Models Explained

Diffusion Models Explained

If you have used tools like Midjourney, DALL-E, or Stable Diffusion, you have experienced diffusion models. These are the AI systems that can generate stunning images from text descriptions. The way they work is surprisingly elegant and very different from how language models work.

The core idea of diffusion is simple: start with pure random noise, then gradually remove the noise to reveal a clear image. Imagine taking a photograph and slowly adding static to it until it becomes unrecognizable. That is the forward process. Diffusion models learn to reverse this: starting from static, they progressively remove noise until a clear image emerges.

Training a diffusion model involves taking clean images, adding known amounts of noise, and teaching the model to predict what noise was added. The model learns to understand the structure of images so well that it can start from completely random noise and transform it into a coherent picture that matches a text description.

The generation process happens in steps, typically 20 to 100 steps depending on the quality needed. At each step, the model predicts a less noisy version of the image. This is why generating images takes longer than generating text. Each step requires a full pass through the model, and more steps generally produce higher quality results.

Modern diffusion models like Stable Diffusion add an extra component called a text encoder that converts your prompt into a representation the model can use to guide the denoising process. This is why you can control the generated image with text. The model learns to associate concepts with visual patterns and can combine them in novel ways to create images that have never existed before.
